Netflix’s Squid Game debuted to record-breaking viewership numbers last year, becoming the streamer’s first series to cross 1 billion hours viewed. Now, Squid Game has earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Drama Series, making history by becoming the first non-English-language show to land a nomination in said category. The series earned a total of 14 nominations, including one for actor Lee Jung-jae.

Squid Game will face competition for Outstanding Drama Series from AMC’s Better Call Saul, HBO’s Euphoria and Succession, Netflix’s Ozark, Apple TV Plus’ Severance, and Showtime’s Yellowjackets. Also competing for Outstanding Drama Series is Stranger Things season 4, which earned a total of 13 nominations. Unfortunately, Stranger Things season 4 did not receive any acting nominations despite there being early buzz for Sadie Sink in particular. Star Wars was also present at the Emmys, with Star Wars: Vision earning an Outstanding Short Form Animated Program nomination while The Book of Boba Fett scored 4 technical nods.

Marvel Studios also scored multiple Emmy nominations this year thanks to Moon Knight (8 nominations), Loki (6 nominations), Hawkeye (2 nominations), and the animated What If…? series (3 nominations). While most of these nominations were in technical categories, the late Chadwick Boseman earned a posthumous nomination for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance for his work as Star Lord/T’Challa in What If…?, which itself was nominated for Outstanding Animated Program. Jeffrey Wright also received a nomination for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance for his performance as The Watcher in What If…? while F. Murray Abraham scored a nomination in the same category for his work as Khonshu in Moon Knight.

It’s safe to say there was no shortage of quality television shows to pick this year, and most seem to have earned recognition at the Emmys. Of course there will be snubs, but fans can find out if their favorite show or performers win big when the 74th Emmy Awards air on September 12, 2022, on NBC.

Stranger Things and Squid Game are streaming on Netflix while Marvel Studios’ original series can be watched on Disney Plus.
