Subnautica: Below Zero promises that it will take players deeper underwater than ever before, but that doesn’t mean it is handed to the player on a silver platter. Instead, they’ll have to work for it, collecting materials and making upgrades that allow them to dive just a bit deeper each time.

Subnautica: Below Zero - Where to Find Nickel Ore

Unlike many different ores in the game, Nickel Ore isn’t actually found in an outcrop. Instead, it spawns on the bottom of the seabed in much the same way that Diamonds do. In order to find this valuable resource, players will need to look in the Crystal Caves, Deep Lilypads Cave, Fabricator Caverns and Lilypad Islands biomes. Harvesting this material is as doesn’t require any kind of special tools, and is as simple as approaching it and pressing the button to pick it up. In the inventory, Nickel Ore only takes up one space.

Subnautica: Below Zero - What is Nickel Ore For?

The primary function of Nickel Ore is to be used in various vehicle upgrades. At the Fabricator, players can use Nickel Ore to craft a Jump Jet Upgrade for the Prawn Suit, and there are even more uses at the Modification Station. For the Prawn Suit, Nickel Ore is needed to get the second Depth Upgrade, and for the Seatruck, it is a vital component in the third Depth Upgrade. This impressive modification allows the Seatruck to withstand depths as low as 1000 meters under the sea.

As with many other items, it is also possible to receive this as a gift from a Sea Monkey, although this is hardly a reliable way of finding Nickel. Once the player has found a spot with a good abundance of Nickel in one of the aforementioned biomes, it may be worth crafting a beacon so players can find their way back later.

Subnautica: Below Zero is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
